Hydrogen-based advanced energy systems

Recently, Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells (PEFCs) hold a prospect to be applied as a power source for cars or for small stationary power generation system. PEFC operates by direct conversion of chemical energy (through the electrochemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen) to electrical energy. Since the energy conversion process does not involve conversion to thermal energy, high efficiency is expected. Moreover, its compact size and low operating temperature hold it advantageous compared with other fuel cells. However, there are still many technical issues associated with PEFC before it can be fully introduced into the market, such as cost and durability.
In our laboratory, the technical issues for extensive market introduction of hydrogen energy technology are assessed from the viewpoint of transport phenomena and electrochemistry.
