About SDDL
Welcome to the Structural Dynamics Design Laboratory (SDDL) in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. The SDDL is involved mainly in three areas of research: (i) structural dynamics, (ii) acoustics, and (iii) space systems. The objective of the Laboratory is to explore innovative mechanical designs through investigations of dynamical systems and to train young engineers who will lead this field in the future. The SDDL is led by two faculty members. Professor Masaaki Okuma, the director of the Laboratory, is interested in many areas of structural dynamics, including theoretical modeling, experimental identification, and vibration and noise reduction. His research fields also include the development of sound separation and recognition algorithms. Assistant Professor Hiraku Sakamoto joined the Lab. in 2008. His research interests are the design and analysis of flexible space structures mainly consisting of thin membranes or cables, and in computational mechanics. He also leads the development of small model-satellite, in the scope of the Cansat competition, in order to explore design methodologies for future space systems.
